About the Stamford, Greenwich and Norwalk, Connecticut AreaSTAMFORD Stamford is a coastal community along Connecticut's shoreline. Stamford is a city of approximately 117,000 citizens, consisting of 38.5 square miles. Stamford is 25 miles to the northeast of New York City, and 40 miles southwest of New Haven. Connecticut's Capital is Hartford, which is 90 miles north. Stamford lies within Fairfield County, and borders Greenwich, New Canan, Darien, and Pound Ridge, New York. Stamford is a city that works! Its successes have flourished in the last five years; as the city of Stamford has been recognized and awarded in many different categories. Stamford is an economically sound community and continues to pursue appropriate economic development initiatives to both attract and retain companies and corporations. Within the last 5 years, Stamford has increased its housing units by adding 1000 rental apartments, with another 1000 units planned for the near future, with the redevelopment of the South End. In the early part of the 20th Century, Stamford progressed from a factory hub to a research center, and in the last quarter of the century, to the country's third largest corporate headquarters-community. Today, Stamford is the 4th largest city in Connecticut and its economic growth has soared as it has become known as a financial center. Stamford has also been ranked as the eighth largest business center in the United States. In the past six years, the city has seen incredible growth, and added to the list of prestigious corporate headquarters is the North American Headquarters of UBS. And the Royal Bank of Scotland is also heading this way. The city with its many facets - offers both urban and suburban elements ranging from the multi-acre homes in wooded N. Stamford, to the splendid corporate downtown center, to the beautiful shoreline areas that are enveloped with parks and beaches. In keeping with revitalization, the town leaders are working on implementing one of the City's major projects which will vastly improve a waterfront area along Mill River - a body of water that traverses the downtown. The central core of the City - Stamford Downtown- offers a wide assortment of entertainment, fine restaurants, magnificant retail stores, a shopping mall, two theatres and a variety of interesting attractions that create an atmosphere of fun and excitement for people of all ages and preferences. The downtown is also home to the University of Connecticut's Stamford Campus which is bustling with students coming and going at all times of the day and evening. Stamford's proximity to New York allows those who live and work here ample opportunity to avail themselves of its cultural, retail, employment and other resources. Metro North Railroad provides express train service to New York's Grand Central Station in approximately 40 minutes. The Stamford Transportation Center is located in Stamford's business district, near I-95, which is Connecticut's interstate highway. Another major highway is Route 15, the Merritt Parkway, which crosses Stamford and merges into New York's Hutchinson River Parkway. With the recent tax benefits Hollywood's Film Production Companies received, Stamford has enjoyed a number of major Motion Pictures setting up shop and filming in and around Stamford. No less then eight films shot in Stamford in the Summer of 2007. John Travolta, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robin Williams, Robert Deniro, Kate Winslet are just a few of the actors that have been spotted in local restaurants here. Stamford is proud of its public schools and the multicultural diversity which remains its greatest strength. Stamford initiated a School Resource Officer Program in the community and assigned police officer to all of the high schools and middle schools to further assist the students and to facilitate communications between the young people and the police. The system has been recognized as being one of ten school districts across the country to be named a model of exemplary education reform by the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future. In addition, 79% of all high school graduates pursue higher education. Stamford is one of the first cities in the country, and the first in the State of Connecticut, to implement a School Readiness Program, which offers all four year olds in the community the opportunity to receive a pre-kindergarten education. The program was cited as a model for th rest of the nation by former U.S. Secretary of Education, Richard Riley. In addition, this initiative received and outstanding achievement award from the US Conference of Mayors and a designation of Stamford as one of the most livable Cities in America. Stamford's coastal locations and vast amount of open park space are integral parts of the community and create a beautiful atmosphere which distinguishes the area from a "big" ambiance. To further preserve this unique characteristic, the town has established a Parks Master Plan which will continue to maintain the recreational areas that will provide the citizens of Stamford an exquisite place in which to live and work. More than 600 acres of beautiful parkland are reserved for recreational activities for all residents, without regard to age. Tennis courts, golf courses, public parkes and beaches, marinas, the Stamford Center for the Arts, The Stamford Museum, YMCA, playgrounds, boating, recreation centers, skating and organized programs are all available. The splendid terrain, both inland and along the coast offers virtually every kind of recreational activity. From waterfront communities, to modest dwellings, to elegant homes and estates, and to condominiums and townhomes, housing options are diverse and all inclusive. The magnificent countryside and coastal homes compliment the surrounding meadows, wooded areas and the panoramic Long Island Sound. GREENWICH Greenwich is a beautiful shoreline town located on the Long Island Sound. It is steeped with history, enjoys outstanding municipal services and features a small town ambiance. It is currently the second most expensive area to live in in the United States. The town is comprised of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique flavor. From the waterfront properties Belle Haven and Old Greenwich to the country estates in the woodlands of Round Hill and Banksville, residents share a feeling of pride in and responsibility for this special town. Located approximately 30 miles from Manhattan, it offers 32 miles of shoreline and almost 1500 acres of Parkland. NORWALK Norwalk was founded in 1640 and incorporated in 1651. It is the sixth largest city in the state of Connecticut with a population of 82,951 according to the latest census. Located in southwestern Connecticut, just a one hour drive from New York City; it is a leading business and transportation hub. It borders Darien, New Canaan, Westport and Wilton and is adjacent to the Long Island Sound. It boasts 900 acres of beaches and city owned marinas. The presence of many major employers that are based in and around Norwalk generates job opportunities and enhances economic security for all the communities in the Greater Norwalk area. The Greater Norwalk Area is home to more than 100 churches and synagogues, Norwalk hospital and the center for Advanced Medicine. It also offers Norwalk Public Library and its many branches, a wide variety of industrial companies, The Norwalk Aquarium, a Children's Museum and numerous multi-media communication services. Over the past ten years, Norwalk has undergone a virtual makeover. The improvements at the waterfront, the newly renovated aquarium, the construction, renovation and beautification of major office complexes and factory buildings, historical site preservations, the development of new retail, cultural and recreational facilities all have lent themselves to the revitalization of the greater Norwalk area. This is all in addition to the marvelous shopping in the local shops as well as a variety of factory outlets located throughout the area. Areas such as Silvermine, Cranbury, West Norwalk, Wolfpit, Brookside, SoNo and Rowayton offer all types of living accommodations from Beachfront to Loft-Style to Estate to Wooded Acres. ROWAYTON If you're looking for a small coastal town, then Rowayton may just be the place for you. Hugging the coast of Connecticut and running along the picturesque Five Mile River, Rowayton is unique among small towns along the coast. Only 1.5 square miles, Rowayton is boater's dream with private clubs such as The Roton Point Sailing Assocation, Wee Burn Country Club and The Rowayton Yacht Club at Hickory Bluff on Wilson Cove. This small town has a lot of beachfront with Bayley Beach which is owned and maintained by the District for the use of its residents, as well as Bell Island and Pine Point.
